The Western Mustangs have completed their three-peat as they defeated the Brock Badgers 9-8 in overtime to capture the Baggataway Cup Championship. It was a very exciting and hard fought game on both sides. The Mustangs were able to subdue an early Brock lead and push hard to secure the win.
In the first quarter Brock came out of the gates hot as they got an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Western finally got something going after Brock made it 3-0 early in the second. The Mustangs would but up two on the board before the half as they trailed 4-2 heading into the locker room.
The second half would start with an early Brock goal but the Mustangs would be able to answer as they made it a one point 5-4 game midway through the third. Late in the third Western would tie the game for the first time at 5-5. Brock would answer in the final minute of the third to make it a 6-5 lead heading into the fourth.
It would get even more close and tense in the fourth as both squads had the fans on the edge of their seats. Brock would get a 6-5 lead early and from there on it was like pin ball as both sides went back and fourth scoring. As Brock held an 8-7 lead late in the fourth Western would get a late goal to tie it at 8-8 and send the game into overtime.
The overtime periods were just as intense as both defense’s had to step up huge. With 32 seconds left in the overtime period Tristian Simeoni would fins the back of the net for Western as they took their first lead of the game. Western was able to hold Brock off in the final seconds of the game to secure their sixth all-time Baggataway Cup Championship, third straight.
Western was led by Rowan Kelly who had 3 points (3G) and Cody Ward as he put up 2 points (2G) in the win. Brock would be led by Connor Ham who put up 4 points (3G,1A) and Campbell Parker who had 2 points (2G).
