Both the Halifax and New York Expansion teams are set to start play in the 2019-20 season. New York is a full fledged expansion franchise while Halifax is simply moving from Rochester and Rochester will get an expansion team with the same team name, branding, and everything else. Yes, it’s very confusing.
Earlier last week the NLL New York franchise announced Regy Thorpe as their head coach and General Manager. In the press release it also stated that the team name would be announced soon. That caused a lot of excitement around the new franchise as fans want to see what the new name will be and if they go back to a team that was previously there like the Wings did in Philadelphia.
After a little digging around on the US Patent and Trademark Office website it appears that the NLL has filed a trademark for the New York Saints, New York Beacons, New York Force, and New York Riptide.
The NLL New York franchise had a fan vote on their website back in December for what the team name should be. In that poll the only names listed were New York Beacons, New York Force, and New York Riptide. There was a box below where you were able to type in a suggestion as well. Many, myself included, typed in the New York Saints as many want that team name back.
The New York Saints were an NLL team that was around from 1989 to 2003. The team officially went defunct in 2006, but their last year of play was 2003. In the last few years of the league being called the MILL the Saints were called the New Jersey Saints.
However, the Saints weren’t the last team to play in New York or on Long Island. From the 2007 season to the 2009 season the New York Titans were championship contenders as the runner-ups in 20008 and 2009 before relocating to Orlando.
Just the fact that the NLL registered the trademark for the New York Saints name on December 19th, eight days after the posted the name voting poll, makes many wonder if the league will indeed roll with the New York Saints name for this new expansion franchise.
In addition to New York, the NLL has an expansion franchise coming to Halifax next season as well. The NLL filed the trademark for the team name Halifax Privateers back in January of 2018. However, they have now abandoned that trademark as it is listed as dead.
In November of 2018 the NLL filed trademarks for the team names Halifax Highlanders and Atlantic Highlanders. However the NLL only has team names under those trademarks and no logos.
Last week the NLL filed a trademark for the Halifax Thunderbirds. This trademark includes a team name as well as logos. The fact that the NLL has filed trademarks for both a name and logo for the Halifax Thunderbirds is quite telling and it looks like that could very much be the team name of the Halifax expansion franchise.
