As first reported by Ty Xanders of Inside Lacrosse, Duke senior midfielder Brad Smith will be sidelined with a foot injury on Saturday as the Blue Devils travel to take on Furman in their season opener. Smith could also miss additional time this season as there is no set timetable for his return as of yet.
The All-American was a crucial piece of Duke’s offense as he helped lead them to a NCAA championship Game appearance. Smith was named a USILA All-American in 2018 and was named to the Preseason ALL-ACC team this year.
Smith tallied 65 points (29G, 36A) last season as a Junior for the Blue Devils. Losing Smith, even if it’s for a short period of time, is a huge blow to Duke as they were looking to rely on him as one of their primary options this season.
Without Smith in the lineup the Blue Devils will have to lean on sophomore attackman Joe Robertson as well as junior attackman Joey Manown for offensive production. At the midfield spot the Blue Devils will have to look to sophomore Nakeie Montgomery and junior Kevin Quigley.
The No. 2 ranked Duke Blue Devils will take on the Furman Paladins in an away contest on Saturday.
