Billy Dee Smith is back in Rochester as the Knighthawks have signed the defenseman to a one-year deal. Smith originally retired after last season, his 17th in the NLL. According to the Knighthawks he is expected to play in their game against Buffalo tonight, February 22nd.
Smith was drafted third overall in the 2002 NLL draft by the Buffalo Bandits. He played with the Bandits for 15 seasons before signing with Rochester in September of 2017. Last season Smith helped the Knighthawks to an NLL Finals appearance where they eventually fell to the Saskatchewan Rush.
In a press release Billy Dee Smith said, “I was just expecting to go off into retirement, but it’s funny how things worked out,”
Throughout the course of his career Smith has tallied 77 points (37G,40A), while also recording 53 caused turnovers and scooping up 610 loose balls.
