It’s go time! High School lacrosse season has arrived in the Bluegrass, with week one games starting on Tuesday, February 26th. The meat of it all get’s underway on Friday and Saturday with thirteen games on the docket for the first weekend of the season.

Here are the things to watch for in week one including games, storylines, and more.

Games to Watch:

Trinity will host Montgomery Bell (TN) on Friday at 6pm to kickoff their season against a familiar out-of-state foe. The Shamrocks and Big Red know each other all to well, playing each other every year since 2009 except for 2011. Montgomery Bell leads the series 5-4.

St. Xavier host Pope (GA) (0-2) on Friday at 6:30pm. Pope will have two midweek games before heading up to Louisville for the weekend. This will be the first meeting between these two Southeast foes.

Christian Academy (Lou.) host Male on Friday at 7:30pm. Male head coach Chad Toliver will be coaching in his first game as a head coach. Last season Christian Academy downed Male 22-8.

On Saturday at 12pm Trinity will host Pope (GA) (0-2). Both teams will be coming off of a game the night before. It should be an interesting one as these two teams go head-to-head in their first ever meeting.

Some other games to watch this week include these contest: Tates Creek vs North Oldham (Sat. 6:30pm) and Lexington Catholic vs Dunbar (Sat. 4:30pm).

Week One Storylines:

Out-of-State Matchups: Throughout the first few weeks of the season you will see a lot of teams playing out-of-state opponents. Success against some of these opponents is crucial for teams and the state of lacrosse in Kentucky. Top tier and middle tier teams having success against some of the better out-of-state opponents is a good measuring stick of how the game and talent is growing in the state. The games against other teams in the South can be used as an even greater measuring stick as Kentucky needs to be on par with other states in the South.

Last year it wasn’t the best for Kentucky teams, in terms of out-of-state success. With a few teams like Trinity and St. Xavier playing some pretty good out-of-state teams this weekend, we’ll see how 2019 may look in that regard.

Box Makes You Better: Box lacrosse is exploding in the US and it’s no different in Kentucky. With programs like L4 Lacrosse and Pipeline Box Lacrosse offering elite box lacrosse coaching and training many players have really benefited from playing box. Early on in the season you can tell a difference in the players that played box over the winter and the ones that didn’t. That is defiantly something to keep an eye out for this week and all season long.
