As first reported by Inside Lacrosse, Marquette head coach Joe Amplo is expected to be named the next head coach at Navy. Amplo has been the head coach at Marquette since the programs inception in 2011.

Under Amplo’s guidance the Golden Eagles have turned into a power in the Big East, winning the conference championship in 2016 and 2017. Amplo led Marquette to a 46-45 overall record during his six seasons at the helm.

Prior to coming to Marquette Amplo was an assistant at Hofstra where he served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the Pride. Amplo was also an assistant at Penn following his first coaching gig as a graduate assistant at Hofstra.

Amplo played in college at Hofstra under now Duke head coach John Danowski, helping leading the Pride to an NCAA Quarterfinals appearance as a senior in 1999.

Amplo will now be leading the ship at Navy where he has a lot of work ahead of him, trying to re-establish Navy as a power. Navy went hasn’t made the NCAA tournament since 2016 and went 6-7 last season, missing the Patriot League tournament.

Ryan Wellner has been serving as the interim head coach at Navy since Rick Sowell was fired back in early May.
