Founders’ Cup: Calgary Defeats Six Nations, Claims Gold

The Calgary Shamrocks completed the upset as they defeated the Six Nations Rebels 16-15 in the Gold Medal game on Sunday night, becoming the first team from outside Ontario to capture the cup in ten years. Calgary was able to get ahead early and sustain their lead, warding off a very tough Six Nations team to secure the win.

After trailing 2-0 early, a power-play goal got Calgary on the board and helped get their offense going. They were able to keep that energy going through the rest of the first, taking a 6-3 lead into the intermission. 

While the second was a little more back-and-forth later on, Calgary continued to keep their offensive juices flowing as they went up 11-5 with just under 11 minutes left in the period. Six Nations started to fight back as they did cut the Calgary lead down to 15-10 heading into the third. 

Six Nations really started heating up in the third as they used a four-goal run to cut the Calgary lead to 15-14. While Six Nations seemed ti be firing on all cylinders, Calgart had an answered as they pushed their lead back out to 16-14. Six Nations cut the lead to 16-15 with 6:36 in the third and it looked like they could start to take over once again. However, Calgary was able to hold Six Nations down the stretch and secure the win to capture Gold at the 2019 Founders’ Cup.

In addition to the Gold Medal game, the Seneca WarChiefs claimed fifth place and the Coquitlam Adanacs won the Bronze Medal game. In the fifth place game, Seneca got out to a big lead in the first and never looked back. They were able to put Saskatchewan away early and secure the win in blowout fashion. In the Bronze Medal game, Coquitlam was able to take control after thing being tied at 2 to end the first. Coquitlam used an offensive surge in the third to help capture the victory.
