The Victoria Shamrocks handled the Peterborough Lakers in game one of the Mann Cup series. Victoria was able to get hot early and carried that momentum through the final horn, securing the 13-6 win to take a 1-0 series lead.
A big part of Victoria’s win was the play of Peter Dubenski in net for the Shamrocks. he made 67 saves off of 61 shots for a save percentage of 91%. In addition, Connor Robinson and Chris Boushy led Victoria with four points (3G/1A) each.
For Peterborough, Mike Poulin made 40 saves off of 52 shots for a save percentage of 77%. On the offensive end, Holden Cattoni and Mark Matthews led the way with one goal and one assist each. Also, Shawn Evans had three assists, moving himself to third all-time in Mann Cup points with 161.
Chris Boushy got things started for Victoria early in the first, but Peterborough was quick to answer with a Zach Currier goal less than a minute later. After some back-and-forth play, Victoria took the reigns, finishing the first with three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead heading into the second.
Victoria continued their run early in the second with Tyler Pace finding the back of the net just four minutes into the second. Peterborough finally ended their nearly 19-minute scoring drought with Josh Currier answering just a few minutes later. After two straight from Victoria, Holden Cattoni gave Peterborough their third goal of the game.
Entering the third period with a 9-3 lead, Victoria had all the energy on their side, dominating on both ends of the floor. While Victoria continued to dominate through the third, Peterborough did find a little momentum midway through with a two-goal run. Victoria closed out the game with a Tyler Burton goal to secure the 13-6 victory.
Game two of the series will be played Saturday night at 7:00pm PST.
