The Peterborough Lakers edged the Victoria Shamrocks 9-8 in game three of the Mann Cup to take a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series. It was an extremely back-and-forth tilt as things came right down to the final seconds of play.
Peterborough was led by Kyle Buchanan with six points (3G/3A) while Cory Vitarelli also tallied three points (2G/1A) in the win. Shawn Evans also dished out five assists. In net, Mike Poulin made 34 saves off of 42 shots on goal.
Chris Boushy led Victoria with five points (2G/3A) while Tyler Pace also had four points (2G/2A) and Connor Robinson tallied four assists. Peter Dubenski made 47 saves off of 56 shots on goal.
Peterborough controlled much of the first Period, getting out to a 4-1 lead heading into the second. Thomas Hoggarth and Kyle Buchanan struck early for Peterborough before Chris Wardle got Victoria on the board with a power-play goal midway through the period. Peterborough closed out the period strong with twi straight from Turner Evans and Kyle Buchanan.
Down 4-1 entering the second, Victoria woke up big time as they unloaded in the second period, dominating on both ends of the floor. A goal from Chris Wardle early in the period was the first of a four-goal run for Victoria to take the lead. While they had their opportunities, Peterborough finally ended their scoring drought with a Cory Vitarelli goal late in the period, tying things up at 5 heading into the third.
Mark Matthews got Peterborough going early in the third, scoring just 32 seconds in. Holden Cattoni followed just over a minute later, giving Peterborough the 7-5 lead. After some back-and-forth play, Casey Jackson answered for Victoria, but Cory Vitarelli struck right back with a power-play goal for Peterborough.
With Peterborough holding an 8-6 lead under two minutes to play, Chris Boushy found the back of the net for Victoria to cut the lead to one. Peterborough struck back quickly with Kyle Buchanan stretching their lead back out to two. Tyler Pace scored the last goal of the game for Victoria with just seconds left. Peterborough was able to run the clock out and secure the slim 9-8 win.
