2020 Schedule Preview: Denver Pioneers

The Denver Pioneers are the first DI team to release their 2020 season schedule. The Pioneers come into the 2020 season after going 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the Big East in 2019. Denver lost in the Big East championship game to Georgetown and missed the NCAA tournament.

Game By Game Breakdown

2/8 @ Air Force

The battle between Colorado’s only DI lacrosse teams. This matchup being one of the first games for both teams has grown into somewhat of a tradition over the past decade with six of the past ten meetings being in February. Denver leads the all-time series 21-2, winning the last 12 meetings. Denver’s last loss to Air Force came in 2009 when they lost 10-7 at home. 

Last year Denver won pretty handedly, beating the Falcons 11-4 at home to kickoff the season. The Pioneers look for the same success on the road in 2020. 

2/15 vs Duke 

Denver welcomes Duke to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in February looking to avenge a one-goal 10-9 defeat on the road last season in what was one of the best games of the season. These two teams have met 13 times overall and every year 2011, including an NCAA semifinal matchup in 2014. Duke leads the all-time series 7-6. 

2/22 vs St. Bonaventure

In the first game of the Face-off Classic, Denver will face second-year program St. Bonaventure. This will be the first time that these two programs have met in program history. 

2/23 vs Cleveland State

Denver faced Cleveland State in the second game of the Face-off Classic. Since Cleveland State’s move to DI in 2017 these two teams have faced these two teams have played every year. Denver leads the series 3-0 and won last year’s meeting 16-8. 

3/1 vs North Carolina

In their second game against an ACC opponent, Denver will welcome the North Carolina Tar Heels to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium to kickoff their March stretch of games. Denver has beaten North Carolina in Chapel Hill each of the past two seasons. These two teams have played 17 times with North Carolina leading the series 10-7. 

3/1 @ Notre Dame 

As two of the most successful programs west of the Appalachian Mountains, these two teams have churned our some instant classics over the past few years and developed somewhat of a rivalry. With Notre Dame winning 10-7 in the Pacific Coast Shootout in California last year, Denver looks to defeat the Irish in South Bend in the regular season for the first time since 2016. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 14-10. 

3/15 @ Ohio State

The Denver Pioneers make their second trip to the Midwest, looking to defeat down Ohio State in Columbus for the first time since 2013. Last season, Denver defeated Ohio State 12-7 at home, avenging a mollywhopping in Columbus in 2017. The all-time series is tied at 12. 

3/21 vs Towson

Denver welcomes Towson to Peter Barton Stadium looking to stretch their win streak against the Tigers to four games. Last year, Denver escaped with a 7-6 win on the road against Towson. These two teams have met eight times overall and every year since the NCAA tournament in 2017. The series is tied at 4. 

3/28 @ Georgetown 

Denver kicks off Big East play with a trip to DC to take on Georgetown, a team that has beaten them in the Big East tournament the past two seasons. Denver has won every regular season meeting between two and leads the all-time series 7-2.

4/4 @ Villanova

Denver kicks off April with a trip to Philadelphia to face Big East foe Villanova. The Pioneers took care of the Wildcats 17-11 last year, avenging a devastating 12-11 loss on the road in 2018. Meeting 15 times since 1999, Denver leads the all-time series 12-3. 

4/11 vs St. John’s 

Since joining the Big East in 2014, Denver has played St. John’s every year and has beaten them by a total of 85-54. The Pioneers look to keep their winning streak against the Red Storm going in 2020. 

4/18 @ Providence

In 10 meetings, Denver has beaten Providence ten times by a total of 133-63. With the Friars putting up some good fights in the Big East over the past few seasons, Denver looks to continue their win streak as they travel to Providence for their second to last game of the season. 

4/24 vs Marquette

Denver closes out the 2020 season with a matchup that has gained a lot of steam since Marquette’s inception as a DI program in 2014. Denver beat Marquette 9-8 on the road last season and leads the all-time series 8-2.
