St. Xavier (Ky.) and Trinity (Ky.) – the two powerhouse programs in the Bluegrass – got their 2020 seasons underway over the weekend with each team beating 2019 Alabama runner-up Vestavia Hills (Ala.).

The Tigers took down the Rebels 12-10 on Saturday and the Shamrocks defeated them 14-10 on Sunday.

In Lexington, defending CLL champion Henry Clay also got their 2020 season started strong last week. The Blue Devils took down Tates Creek 16-6 on Friday.

The dynamic duo of juniors Colten Reynolds and Presley Richmond led the way for Henry Clay in the victory. Reynolds tallied nine points (4G/5A), while Richmond had five points (2G/3A). Additionally, sophomore Parker Rowland went 15-for-25 at the faceoff dot and they played three different goalies: Cole Garretson, Sam Reynolds, and Ben Pund.

South Warren Sweeps Volunteer State Competition

The South Warren Spartans (Ky.) were one of many “cinderella like” stories last season as they advanced to the CLL semifinals in just their second season of competition. They look to be building upon last season as they went 2-0 last weekend, beating Metro Nashville (Tenn.) 8-6 and Hendersonville (Tenn.) 9-1.

Spartans’ goalie Daniel Diaz and faceoff man Noah Brandt have had strong personal starts to the season. Diaz currently has a .787 save percentage through two games and tied his career-high 20 saves against Metro Nashville. Brandt is boasting a .720 faceoff percentage through two games.

Head coach Nick Peters and his squad head into the second week of the season 2-0 for the first time in the very brief history of the program. They will take on crosstown rival Bowling Green on Thursday night.

Eagles, Bearcats Secure Big Wins

Lexington Christian (Ky.) and Kentucky Country Day (KCD) (Ky.) were both bottom dwellers last season, not making it far in the playoffs and flirting with or trying to get to the .500 mark all season. But both started the 2020 with a big win.

On Friday, KCD defeated 2019 KSLL quarterfinalist Manual and Lexington Christian defeated 2019 CLL quarterfinalist Scott County. The final for both games was 7-6. The Eagles were led by junior midfielder Jackson Tompkins (3G) and sophomore goalie Spencer Pruden (19 saves). No stats were available for KCD vs Manual.
