Report: Patriot League to Leave Fifth-Year Decision to Individual Schools

According to a report from Terry Foy of Inside Lacrosse, the Patriot League will leave the decision fifth-year players’ ability to take a fifth-year up to individual schools. The report started the the Patriot League issued a memo to its member schools on Thursday concerning this issue. 

This news comes following the NCAA Division I Council’s announcement on Monday that they would grant a blanket waiver granting spring sport athletes an extra year of eligibility. 

The issue of fifth-year players is very tricky for many schools in the Patriot League, as multiple schools in the conference have limited or no graduate school opportunities. Also, neither Army or Navy can have fifth-year players as they will graduate and be commissioned into the United States military following this year. 

Additionally, many Patriot League schools have had impact seniors enter the NCAA Transfer Portal over the past week in the wake of uncertainty around what their eligibility situation may be as a fifth-year player next season.
