The National Lacrosse League (NLL) will be expanding to Texas for the first time in its history, as the league announced that an expansion team will be placed in Fort Worth, Texas and begin play during the 2021-2022 season.
The new Fort Worth franchise nickname will be released at a later date. The league currently holds trademarks for the Fort Worth Herd, Fort Worth Stampede, and Fort Worth Panthers.
Dickies Arena, which just opened in 2019, will be the home of the NLL’s Fort Worth franchise. The arena seats 14,000 and is the result of a pioneering public-private partnership between the City of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, the State of Texas and a group of private-sector participants, including foundations, individuals and organizations. The arena is owned by the City of Fort Worth and managed by the not-for-profit operating entity, Trail Drive Management Corp. (TDMC). The arena has hosted concerts, sporting events and family entertainment, and is home to Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo performances.
The Fort Worth franchise is owned by Bill Cameron, who is a partial owner and serves on the boards for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as the lead owner and chairman for the WNBA’s Dallas Wings.
