Midnight on September 1st, as it has since 2017, marked the opening of the contact period between 2022 recruits (juniors) and college coaches. And while the recruiting process will be a bit different for the class of 2022, just like this whole year has, due to limitations brought on by the Coronavirus outbreak, there have already been multiple commitments through the first few days of the contact period being open.

North Carolina, Michigan, and Syracuse have landed the first three commitments in the class.

Joe Breschi and the North Carolina Tar Heels picked up the first commitment of the 2022 class, as Rye, N.Y. midfielder Caden Whaling announced that he would be taking his talents to Chapel Hill on Tuesday afternoon.

The 6-foot-1 midfielder came onto the scene strong as a freshman, helping to lead his team to a 16-6 record, regional title, and NYSPHSAA Class C semifinal appearance in 2019. Whaling, who plays both ways, tallied 53 points (35G/18A) during his freshman campaign, leading the Garnets in both goals and assist. He didn’t get to play this past spring after New York cancelled spring high school sports. The midfielder was named an All-Section, Conference, and League selection last season and was selected to the 2020 Under Armour All-American Underclassmen Tournament this summer.

Whaling is a dual sport athlete, playing running back and linebacker for the Garnets on the gridiron as well.

St. Michael’s College, Ont. attackman/midfielder Finlay Thomson announced his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines on Wednesday. He is the first prospect in the 2022 class from Canada to announce his commitment.

Rated as a four-star by Inside Lacrosse, Thomson is the younger brother of former Marquette standout Tanner Thomson and current Marquette freshman Hudson Thomson and redshirt junior Keaton Thomson. The 6-foot-2, 155 pound attackman helped the Gaels to an 11-4 record last spring. He has been a four year starter for St. Michael’s. He was not able to play this spring after their season was cancelled.

Thomson played in four regular season and two playoff games for the Mimico Mountaineers Jr. A last season, tallying seven points (3G/4A) overall. He was named the OLA MVP with the Midget “A” MVP last summer with Mimico. Their 2020 season was also cancelled.

John Desko and the Syracuse Orange have landed a commitment from Austin, Texas midfielder Zach Mercado. He announced his commitment to the Orange on Wednesday night.

In eight games this past spring, Mercado recorded 24 points (19G/5A) and helped lead the Maroons to 5-2 record. The 5-foot-10, 155 pound midfielder was selected was selected to the 2020 Under Armour All-American Underclassmen Tournament this summer. As a freshman in 2019, Mercado was selected as a THSLL DI Central District Honorable Mention.

Mercado also play football for the Maroons as well, where he plays defensive back. He led his team in tackles last season with 108.
