On Wednesday morning, Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) announced that they would be merging into one league. The formal announcement from the leagues came following an initial report from Sportico’s Scott Soshnick.

The merger reunifies pro field lacrosse for the first time since the fall of 2018 when the PLL was formally announced.

As part of the merger, all operations will now move under control of the PLL. However, the Boston Cannons, who will be rebranded as the Cannons Lacrosse Club, are the only MLL team that will be moving to the PLL as an expansion franchise. The league will hold an expansion draft to fill out the Cannons’ roster.

While the Chesapeake Bayhawks, Connecticut Hammerheads, Denver Outlaws, New York Lizards, and Philadelphia Barrage will not be initially added as expansion teams, the PLL does obtain their rights for future expansion considerations.

Additionally, two leagues have created a transition team that will oversee the transition of the two leagues.
