On Thursday evening a blockbuster trade went down in the PLL, as Atlas LC traded attackman Rob Pannell to Redwoods LC in exchange for the No. 3 pick in the 2021 Entry Draft and a second round pick in the 2021 College Draft. The Post Game podcast first reported the news and the league later confirmed it.
This trade marks the end of a one-year stint with the Atlas for Pannell. A star in college at Cornell, where he won the Tewarraton Award in 2013, and in the MLL, where he won the league’s MVP award in 2018, held the league’s single-season points record (78) and was the face of the New York Lizards franchise, came over to the PLL from the MLL last season and was taken third overall by Atlas in the Entry Draft.
During the PLL Championship Series over the summer, Pannell 15 points (6G/9A) in five games. He led Atlas in points and assists and was second in goals. He was 10th in the league in points and third in assists.
Trading Pannell opens up a spot on Atlas’ roster at attack and specifically gives them a need for an ‘X’ attackman. They will likely use their first overall pick in the PLL College Draft on Duke’s Michael Sowers who fits that very need to a T.
Pannell now joins a Redwoods team that already features a very solid attack unit with Ryder Garnsey, Matt Kavanagh, and Jules Heningburg. With Pannell in part of that unit, they will likely opt to run one of the three aforementioned players out of the box or bump them to midfield this season.
This is the second offseason blockbuster trade that Redwoods Head Coach Nat St. Laurent has made in the league and club’s two season existence. Last offseason, Redwoods traded midfielder Sergio Perkovic to Chaos LC for midfielder Myles Jones. Redwoods also acquired attackman Jules Heningburg via trade during the league’s inaugural season in 2019.
Redwoods went 3-3 during the PLL Championship Series and fell in the semifinals to the eventual champion Whipsnakes LC.
