Former Syracuse great and current Orange women’s lacrosse head coach Gary Gait is set to move to the men’s side and take over as the head coach of his alma mater, per a report from Inside Lacrosse.
Gait will replace current head coach John Desko, who is also a Syracuse alum and has been at the helm of the Orange since the 1999 season and been on staff with the Orange since the 1980 season. Desko led Syracuse to five national championships and a 265-92 overall record, which includes a 7-6 season in 2021.
According to the initial report from Inside Lacrosse, Desko is set to announce his retirement this past week.
Gait has served as the Orange’s head women’s coach since 2007 and has led the program to eight Final Four appearances, including a national champion runner-up in 2021. He played at Syracuse from 1987-1990 and helped lead the Orange to three consecutive NCAA titles (1988, 1989, 1990).
The former Orange great will be just the fifth head coach in the program’s 106-year history.
Syracuse offensive coordinator Pat March, who just finished his season season with the Orange, is likely to be staying on staff, multiple sources tell Lacrosse Bucket.
