From the final day of June through the first few days of July, the recruiting trails has been as hot as it has been in quite sometime. Service academies were able to contact rising juniors on July 1st, Penn State has pulled off a pair of flips in the 2022 class.
Army, Navy Grab Initial 2023s
July 1st marks the first day that service academies (Air Force, Army, Navy) can contact rising juniors. And as usual, both Army and Navy grabbed commitments in the first few days of the contact period.
Not even a full day into the contact period period opening up for service academies, Joe Albrechi and the Army Black Knights picked up the first commitment in the 2023 class with Roswell (Ga.) attackman Hill Plunkett choosing the Black Knights and following his brother, Evan, who will be a freshman at West Point.
A day later, Joe Amplo and the Navy Midshipmen grabbed their first commitment in the class of 2023 with Shoreham-Wading River midfielder/attackman deciding to take his talents to Annapolis.
Penn State’s Hot Streak
Almost exactly three weeks after grabbing St. Ignatius (Calif.) attackman Nils Berry, who had previously been committed to Bates, to round out their 2021 class, the Nittany Lions pulled off two flips to cap off the month of June.
Springfield (Pa.) defenseman/LSM Ryan O’Connor announced on June 30th that he flipped his commitment from Villanova to Penn State. Rated as a three-star by Inside Lacrosse, O’Connor is coming off a stellar junior season where he racked up All-American honors.
In addition, the Nittany Lions also snagged Taft (Conn.) midfielder Ben Spinelli from Notre Dame. A four-star, per Inside Lacrosse, Spinelli initially committed to Brown before flipping to the Irish in December. He helped lead Taft to a national championship at the GEICO High School Nationals in late May.
The Nittany Lions also grabbed a commitment from St. Augustine (N.J.) midfielder Luke Scarpello. He put up 31 points off 25 goals and six assists for the Hermits as a junior.
