Penn State Nittany Lions have landed the services of Richmond grad transfer midfielder Tate Gallagher. The Nittany Lions announced the news on social media on Friday afternoon.

The  Ardmore, Pa., native returns to his home state after a career at Richmond in which he was a three-time captain and was apart of two NCAA Tournament runs with the Spiders in 2018 and 2019. Gallagher was the Spiders’ sixth-leading scorer in 2019 (19G/5A) while starting 11 of 17 games. Starting all seven games of the shortened 2020 season, Gallagher was seventh on the team in scoring with seven points off four goals and three assists.

During the 2021 season, Gallagher moved to the short-stick defensive midfield position and thrived. The Keystone State native scooped up right ground balls, caused five turnovers, and scored two goals while helping lead Richmond to their seventh consecutive conference title game appearance. He racked up second team All-SoCon honors as the SSDM spot.

In addition to the addition of Gallagher, Penn State also announced that midfielder Jack Kelly, faceoff man Jake Glatz, midfielder Brayden Peck, and defenseman Brayden Peck will be returning for a fifth-season.

Kelly is a three-year starter and was the Nittany Lions’ seventh-leading scorer with nine points off six goals and three assists this past season. During Penn State’s 2019 Championship Weekend run, Kelly put up 51 points (42G/9A) and was third on the team in goals behind Mac O’Keefe and Dylan Foulds.

Glatz saw action in seven games during the 2021 season, going 23-for-45 (51%) at the faceoff dot as the Nittany Lions’ second option at the dot.

Peck recorded nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers while starting in six of seven contests for the Nittany Lions in 2021. A four-year starter, he has played in all 44 games with 42 starts during his time in Happy Valley and will be Penn State’s most experienced close defenseman in 2022.

Townsend has played in 37 games with 5 starts during his Penn State career, tallying a total of 10 goals and eight assists for 18 points. He did not see any action during the 2021 season.
