2022 Schedule Preview: VMI Keydets

The VMI Keydets are the second DI program to release their 2022 schedule, doing so on Friday afternoon. The Keydets are heading into their second season under head coach James Purpura and coming off a 2021 campaign in which they went 1-10 overall and 0-6 in SoCon play.

Key Games

2/12 vs Lafayette: The Purpura era at VMI began on the road against the Leopards last season, where the Keydets scored their lone victory of the season, 13-12. The Keydets will again open the season against the Leopards, but this time will be welcoming them to Lexington.

2/22 & 4/23 @/vs Hampton: Now conference foes with Hampton joining the SoCon, the Keydets and Pirates will face each other twice this season. Only the second game will count as a conference game. VMI have faced Hampton four times since the Pirates’ inaugural season in 2016, winning all four handily. However, this will be their first meeting with Chazz Woodson leading the Pirates.

3/19 vs Bellarmine: VMI and Bellarmine have faced each other eight times in program history, including six times as conference opponents, and twice last season. The Keydets and Knights will meet as non-conference opponents in 2022 for the first time since 2011. Bellarmine has won all eight contests, but including 12-8 and 11-9 victories last season.

3/26 @ Cleveland State: The Keydets and Vikings faced each other twice last season, including a the season finale for each squad. Cleveland State won both contests. However, VMI ended their season-ending matchup against the Vikings with a four-goal run in the fourth quarter to make just a three-goal loss after trailing 14-7 at the end of the third.
