Southern Scorecard: Recapping November Movement

(Photo: Episcopal Lacrosse)

A of writing this, there have been 55 players from the South commit to DI programs in the class of 2023, per the Lacrosse Bucket Database. Eight of those commitments came during the month of November.

Virginia and Florida lead the way in number of commitments in the class with 13 each while Georgia trail them with 12. North Carolina has seen eight 2023s commit to DIs while Texas has seen seven. Alabama has produced one DI commit in the class.

Here is a state-by-state breakdown of the movement seen in the South amongst the 2023 class over the past month.

Florida

The Sunshine State saw three players come off the board in the ’23 class this past month, including one of the most notable recent moves on the national stage as Benjamin School (Fla.) midfielder Luke Pisani verbaled to the Virginia Cavaliers late in the month.

Pisani originally committed to Army West Point last fall as a member of the 2022 class before decommitting and reclassifying. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound midfielder is an exceptional athlete who can prove to be a matchup nightmare for defenders, especially as a downhill dodger. Often playing a pretty gritty style of lacrosse, Pisani can also be an impact in between the lines in the riding game and on the back end as a short-stick defender if needed.

Additionally, Tampa Jesuit (Fla.) junior faceoff man Scott “SK” Moore verbaled to High Point. He is coming off an exceptional campaign last spring where he went 84% at the dot and was often the catalyst for early offense. Vermont also continued to build their Florida pipeline, adding Holy Trinity Episcopal (Fla.) defenseman Jack Coombs to the class.

Georgia

Just one player from the Peach State verbaled to a DI in the 2023 class last month as Mill Creek (Ga.) goalie Brayden Wilson chose to stay home at play for the Mercer Bears. Wilson is the first player to verbal to the Bears this cycle.

Texas

The only move in the ’23 class this past month in the Lone Star State was Luke Sganga announcing that he would be playing his college lacrosse for the Utah Utes. The Southlake (Texas) attackman had a strong 2021 campaign, putting up 47 goals and nine assists. He is the second Texas native to verbal to the Utes this cycle, joining Kaden Davis (Lake Travis, Texas).

Virginia

Old Dominion saw three players from the 2023 class find homes at DIs last month.

The most notable move out of the state in November was Episcopal (Va.) junior attackman Caulley Deringer announcing his commitment to Lars Tiffany and the Virginia Cavaliers. The lefty has one of the smoothest releases in high school lacrosse and knows how to get himself open, and put the ball in the back of the net. He also has a good amount of burst and quickness that he is able to tap into when needed, which can make him a difficult cover whether he has the ball in his stick or not. He is the second in-state commitment in the class for the Cavaliers.

Richmond and VMI also added home grown players in their ’23 classes during the month of November. Robinson Secondary (Va.) faceoffman Adam Dembicki verbaled to the Spiders and Colonial Forge (Va.) faceoff man AJ Riley chose the Keydets.
