Southern Scorecard: ’23 Movement From January

The first month of the new year saw seven players from the South in the 2023 class commit to DIs, brining the total number of commits from the region in the class to 73.

Virginia leads the way in number of commitments with 18 while Georgia and Florida sit behind them with 15 and 14, respectively. Texas has seen 11 players in the class find homes at DI while North Carolina has seen 11. Alabama and South Carolina have each produced one DI commit in the class.

Here is a state-by-state breakdown of the movement seen in the South amongst the 2023 class over the past month.

Florida

Arguably the biggest commitment from the region over the past month came out of the Sunshine State as Oxbridge (Fla.) Defenseman/LSM Noah Prissert verbaled to Brown on the 19th of the month. Prissert had taken visits to UAlbany, Lafayette, and Penn State, in addition to Brown back in October.

The 6-foot, 185-pound pole is a ground ball machine, always seeming to come up with the ball in nearly every situation. Able to run the field very well and comfortable crossing the midline regularly, Prissert’s skillset should fit well into the fast-paced style of play seen from Mike Daly teams. He could play close or LSM at the next level and be an impact all over.

Georgia

The Peach State saw two players in the ’23 class verbal to DIs this past month.

Creekview (Ga.) midfielder Jackson Sedlack committed to Bellarmine and Milton (Ga.) midfielder Franklin Schulhofer has verbaled to the VMI Keydets.

Sedlack is a strong presence on the perimeter as both a shooter and a dodger. Schulhofer has shown an ability to be of impact on both ends of the field, being a strong presence at midfield as an offensive and defensive player.

North Carolina

A Tar Heel State native, Virginia Episcopal (Va.) goalie Bryce Ledwith verbaled to the Bellarmine Knights on the ninth of the Month. The 5-foot-10, 145-pound goalie is a two-year varsity starter for the Fighting Bishops. Especially good at stopping shots from in close, Ledwith was a second team All-State selection in 2021.

Texas

Westlake (Texas) midfielder Jarett Bessette was the only commitment out of the Lone Star State during the month of January, announcing that he would play his college lacrosse for Jon Torpey and the High Point Panthers.

Through his first two seasons of high school ball, Bessette has shown to be able to use his speed and length as a strong downhill dodger. He has also shown to be able to be a solid off-ball talent, being able to cut to the crease and make plays happen.

Virginia

Two players in the ’23 class from Virginia verbaled to DIs over the past month.

Just days into the new year, Dominion (Va.) midfielder Gavin Burke announced his commitment to the Drexel Dragons. Burke is coming off a strong sophomore season where he racked up 54 points off 37 goals and 17 assists while helping lead his team to a 14-0 undefeated season and a state championship. Burke also had 12 caused turnovers and 54 ground balls last spring.

Riverside (Va.) attackman Chase Paschuck has committed to play for John Galloway and the Jacksonville Dolphins. While not the biggest, Paschuck is a quarterbacking attackman with a quick first step that makes him a hard cover, and he has one heck of a shot to further add to his skillset as well.
