The summer is heating up and so is the coaching carousel.
While only one head coaching position remains open (NJIT), the dominos are just beginning to fall on the assistant coaching front.
Navy, Penn State, and Holy Cross have each recently made assistant coaching hires.
The most notable move came on Monday night as Ty Xanders of Inside Lacrosse reported that Georgetown associate head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Phipps would be leaving the Hoyas to join Joe Amplo’s staff at Navy as the Midshipmen’s next offensive coordinator. Phipps replaced Brad Ross who took over the reigns as the head coach at Bryant last week.
An Annapolis native, this moves marks a return to not only his hometown but also to the Naval Academy for Phipps as he served on the previous staff at Navy under Rick Sowell from 2015-17.
Serving on Kevin Warne’s staff at Georgetown since 2017, Phipps was named the program’s associate head coach ahead of the 2021 season. He has helped the Hoyas to four consecutive Big East championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.
This past season, Phipps oversaw a Georgetown offense that was one of the best in college lacrosse and featured four All-Big East selections as well as both the conference’s midfielder and attackman of the year in Graham Bundy, Jr. and Dylan Watson.
Holy Cross Hires Euker
On Tuesday afternoon, Holy Cross announced the addition of Keith Euker to J.L. Reppert’s staff. Euker served as the volunteer assistant for Boston U. last season where he worked with second-team All-Patriot League faceoff man Conor Calderone.
Euker previously served as the head coach at McDaniel College (DIII) for six seasons from 2016-2021 and as the top assistant at Denison in 2014 and 2015. He also spent time as part of Michigan’s inaugural DI staff and served as the head coach of Missouri’s MCLA team from 2010-2011.
Joe Bucci Heading to State College
After two seasons serving as the defensive coordinator for UMBC, Joe Bucci will be joining Jeff Tambroni’s staff at Penn State. Matt Chandik was the first to report the news last week.
Bucci joined Ryan Moran’s staff at UMBC in the fall of 2016 and was promoted to a full-time assistant ahead of the 2018 season. He took over as the Retrievers’ defensive coordinator each of the past two seasons. He oversaw a unit in 2022 that ended the year ranked 9th in goals allowed per game and tied for fifth in man-down success.
He played at Georgetown from 2012-2016 and was a team captain in each of his final two seasons with the Hoyas. He was a second team All-Big East midfielder as a senior in 2016.
