Former Canisius faceoff man Johnny Richiusa will be playing college lacrosse in the Empire State next season, but will be doing so for Gary Gait and the Syracuse Orange. He announced his decision via Instagram on Monday afternoon.

A Penfield, N.Y., native, Richiusa went 149-for-286 (52%) as a freshman at Canisius this past spring and was named a MAAC All-Rookie selection. He ended the season ranked fourth in faceoff percentage in the MAAC and 39th nationally (fourth among freshmen).

At Syracuse, Richiusa joins an Orange program entering its second season under head coach Gary Gait. The Orange went 4-10 last season and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 15 years.

Richiusa should be expected to fight for a starting spot with the Orange’s primary faceoff man Jakob Phaup graduating and Jack Savage transferring out. Sophomore Jack Fine and incoming freshman Gavin Gibbs (Notre Dame,Pa.) are the only other players in that faceoff room.
