2023 Schedule Breakdown: VMI Keydets

The VMI Keydets are the first DI program to release its 2023 men’s lacrosse schedule. The Keydets are coming off a 2022 campaign in which they went 4-11 (2-3 SoCon). The Keydets will be joining the MAAC this spring, returning to the league they were once apart of from  2003-2013.

VMI’s 2023 schedule will feature 15 games with seven of them coming at home and eight on the road. The Keydets’ will open MAAC play on the road at LIU on March 11th.

Key Games

2/4 vs Detroit Mercy: The Keydets will open the season at home against the Detroit Mercy Titans. VMI fell on the road to Detroit Mercy 16-11 last season, despite jumping ahead 9-4 at the end of the first quarter and holding an 11-8 lead at the half. Facing each other six times since 2010, Detroit Mercy holds a 5-1 lead in the series. VMI’s lone win against the Titans came in 2012.

2/25 @ St. Bonaventure: VMI was in consecutive one-goal games last season, losing one and winning one. St. Bonaventure is the one they lost, falling 9-8 in overtime. It was the first ever meeting between the two.

3/29 vs Mount St. Mary’s: The other one-goal game the Keydets were involved in was an 8-7 win over the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers. When the two meet this spring it will be as conference foes with both joining the MAAC. VMI’s win marked its first over the Mountaineers since 2005. Mount St. Mary’s holds a 14-2 record in the series.

4/8 vs Manhattan: VMI will welcome the defending MAAC champion Manhattan Jaspers to Lexington the second weekend of April. The two programs have met 15 times since 2003 with the Jaspers taking 11 of those meetings, including a 14-10 win last season that saw the Jaspers rattle off a four-goal game-winning run late in the fourth quarter.
