Detroit Mercy went with an internal hire for it’s next head men’s lacrosse coach, promoting current assistant and 2018 graduate Charlie Hayes.

Hayes has been on the Titans’ sideline since 2019-2020 when he returned to his alma mater as a graduate assistant and director of lacrosse operations. He was elevated to a full-time assistant role ahead of the 2021 season.

During his time as an assistant, Hayes helped Detroit Mercy in its transition from the MAAC to the ASUN. He now begins his tenure as head coach with the program making the transition from the ASUN to the NEC.

Hayes takes over a program that went 3-10 (3-6 ASUN) this past spring and has gone 7-30 since making the jump from the MAAC to the ASUN ahead of the 2022 season.

Detroit Mercy, as a member of the MAAC, made three conference tournament appearances and three championship game appearances. The last of those came during Hayes’ senior season in 2018 when the Titans went 9-7 (5-1 MAAC) and fell to Canisius in overtime of the MAAC title game. Hayes was a First-Team All-MAAC SSDM for that squad.

Hayes is a current pro in the PLL, playing for the Philadelphia Waterdogs.

A Mitten State native, Hayes is a product of Eisenhower High School in the Detroit suburb of Shelby Township.
