2023 Schedule Breakdown: Sacred Heart Pioneers

The Binghamton Bearcats are the 32nd DI program to release its 2023 men’s lacrosse schedule. The Pioneers are coming off a 2022 campaign in which they went 3-10 overall and 1-6 in NEC play. 2023 will be Sacred Heart’s first in the MAAC.

Return to The Basics Helps Sacred Heart Turn The Page, Grab Upset Win Over Hobart

This time last season, the Sacred Heart Pioneers were 1-7 and on their way to ending the year with a 1-12 record (0-8 NEC). Just two weeks ago, some could say that the Pioneers might be heading down a similar path as they held a 1-3 record and were coming off losses to Fairfield and Providence.

Saturday Recap: Notre Dame Earns Much-Needed Win, Princeton Knocks off Penn in OT Thriller, Maryland Topples Virginia in National Title Rematch

After Two Consecutive One-Win Seasons, Can Sacred Heart Get Back on Track?

Jon Basti arrived at Sacred Heart ahead of the 2014 season and in just four years on the job had the Pioneers playing their best lacrosse as a DI program (2000-present). With program greats Max Tuttle and Joe Saggese leading the way, Sacred Heart made three consecutive NEC Tournament appearances from 2017-2019 and, recorded 24 wins over those three seasons, which is a program-record three-season win total at the DI level. It’s also the only time the Pioneers have made the postseason three consecutive seasons as a DI.

Led by Offensive Firepower, How Much Can Sacred Heart Rebound in 2021?

In 2016, which was the freshman year of Max Tuttle and Joe Saggese, Sacred Heart went 2-14. With Tuttle and Saggese helping to lead the way, the Pioneers were able to rise up out of that pitfall and in 2019 put together one of their best seasons in program history. During that historic season, Sacred Heart went 9-6 overall, 5-3 in the NEC, and reached the NEC semifinals.
