After 17 seasons at the helm, Merrimack head coach Mike Morgan has resigned.

The school announced the move on Saturday evening just hours after the Warriors defeated Bryant in their regular season finale.

Merrimack finished the 2024 season with a 6-8 overall record and 4-3 clip in America East play. The Warriors’ win helped them clinch the No. 4 seed in the America East Tournament. They will play UAlbany in the semifinals on Thursday.

A 2000 Merrimack alum, Morgan took over as the head coach of his alma mater ahead of the 2008 season. Under his guidance the Warriors’ program became a DII powerhouse. Their run in DII eclipsed with back-to-back national championship runs in 2018 and 2019. Morgan led Merrimack to six DII final four appearances.

Under Morgan’s guidance, the Warriors made the jump to DI during the shortened 2020 season. In the program’s DI era, the Warriors collected a 25-31 overall record. They are 14-15 in the America East. The 2024 season was the first for the program in which they were eligible for postseason play since making the jump to DI.

Morgan exits Merrimack with a 188-72 overall record during his 17 years at the helm.

Morgan’s departure comes a week following an incident in the Merrimack-UAlbany game where a Merrimack play was reported using a racial slur towards and Albany player. Both the America East Conference and Merrimack were prompted to issue statements following the contest.

Merrimack is the second DI program to have a head coaching opening this cycle, following Detroit Mercy’s announcement last week that Chris Kolon would be stepping down at the end of the season.
